There are two types of slide shows you can create with Elements: "simple" slide shows, which provide few controls and are saved as PDF files, and "custom" slide shows, which provide much more flexibility and are saved as WMV (video) files. For each, you can choose from a number of quality options, which of course affect the size of the file and, if streamed from the web, the bandwidth required.
Elements user Mark Williams has written up a very helpful document, Guide to Slide Shows, comparing the different types. He also suggests using the Photo Book creation type, rather than either of the "official" slide show types, to create slide shows, and provides tips on how to do so.
The examples below all use the same set of 10 photos. A 30-photo slideshow would be roughly three times as large, so you can see that slideshow files are rather large for email if they have more than one to two dozen photos, depending on the quality level chosen and the particular email host limits.
